Peter Davis: Clear Sight
Da Gadderie, Shetland Museum
January 28-March 5, 2023
A Shetland Amenity Trust exhibition
The title Clear Sight was suggested to me and seems appropriate as an exhibition title for various reasons. At a simplistic level, since I moved three years ago to Silwick, I now have a clear sight of the sea which has been a constant in my painting for decades. Clear sight also describes my sense of where I am now and where I want to be in developing my work in the future (I’m tempted to say when I grow up!). And clear sighted in front of nature is the state that Paul Cezanne remarked on, in the final months of his life, in a letter to his son in 1906. He also wrote...
“Here on the edge of the river, the motifs are very plentiful, the same subject seen from a different angle gives a subject for study of the highest interest and so varied that I think I could be occupied for months without changing my place, simply bending a little more to the right or left.”
I’ve lived with this quote for many years. It speaks of contemplation, obsession and affirmation and feels very appropriate for where I am today, both geographically and spiritually. I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of painting the view from my window.
The medium is watercolour which I consider the most natural in re-presenting nature. It’s a medium I’ve worked with continuously for well over forty years but that doesn’t mean it gets any easier to use. You just go with the flow and learn to handle the mistakes better.
